Why Your Phone or Laptop Won't Charge or Power On

A phone or laptop that won't charge — or won't switch on at all — is one of the most alarming faults there is, because it can hide anything from a five-minute fix to a genuine safety issue. The good news is that most charging problems follow a small number of patterns, and once you understand how charging actually works inside the device, the symptoms start to make sense.

This guide explains, in plain language, what happens between your charger and your battery, what the common symptoms usually mean, and — importantly — how to tell the difference between a simple battery replacement and a fault on the logic board that needs microsoldering. We'll also cover swollen batteries: why they happen, why they're dangerous, and exactly what to do (and what never to do).

How charging actually works: charger, port, charging IC and battery

Charging looks simple from the outside — plug in, wait, unplug — but inside your device there's a small chain of parts, and every link has to do its job.

  • The charger and cable deliver power from the wall. A basic USB charger supplies power at typically around 5 V, while fast chargers negotiate higher voltages with the device.
  • The charge port (USB-C, Lightning or a laptop's DC jack) is the physical connection. It takes a lot of mechanical wear — plugging, unplugging, pocket lint, the odd yank on the cable — and is a very common failure point.
  • The charging IC / charge controller is the chip that actually manages charging. It regulates the voltage and current flowing into the battery, decides how fast to charge, and protects the cell from overcharging and overheating.
  • The PMIC (power-management IC) is a larger chip that distributes regulated power to the whole device — screen, processor and the rest. On many phones the charging function and power management are closely linked, which is why a power fault and a charging fault can look identical from the outside.
  • The battery is a lithium-polymer (or lithium-ion) cell that stores the energy.

The key point to take away: the battery is only the last link in the chain. When a device won't charge, the battery is one suspect among several — the port, the charging IC, the PMIC or a nearby component on the board can all be responsible. That's why a genuine diagnosis matters more than a guess.

"Won't charge" or "won't power on": what the symptoms usually mean

Different symptoms point to different causes. None of these is a definitive diagnosis on its own, but they narrow things down considerably.

  • Won't charge at all, no response when plugged in: could be a dead cable or adapter, a failed charge port, or a charging IC / PMIC fault on the board. Always rule out the cable and wall charger first with a known-good set.
  • Only charges in a certain position, or when you press or wiggle the cable: this strongly suggests a worn or damaged charge port, or a cracked solder joint where the port meets the board.
  • Stuck at a percentage, or charges very slowly: often an ageing battery, but it can also be a charging IC that is no longer regulating current properly.
  • Shows "charging" but the percentage never moves, or won't power on: can be a deeply discharged or failed battery, or a board-level power fault stopping the device from booting.
  • Gets hot while charging: heat is a warning sign. It can mean a struggling battery or a component drawing too much current — stop charging and have it checked.
  • Dies suddenly, or shuts off while there's still plenty of charge left: a classic sign of a worn battery that can no longer hold its voltage under load, though a faulty power circuit can cause it too.
  • Swollen, bulging or deformed body, a lifting screen, or a trackpad that clicks oddly: a swelling battery — treat this as a safety issue and see the section below straight away.

Battery or board? When a new battery is enough — and when it isn't

This is the question that decides the whole repair: do you simply need a new battery, or is the fault on the board itself?

A battery replacement is enough when the cell has simply worn out — it holds less charge, drains quickly, shuts down early or has begun to swell, but the charging circuit around it is healthy. Batteries are consumables; after a few years of charge cycles they degrade, and fitting a new cell restores normal life. This is the most common charging-related repair by far.

It's a board-level fault when the problem lies in the charging circuit rather than the battery. Typical examples:

  • A failed charging IC / PMIC — the chip that manages charging or power distribution has died, so the device won't charge or won't power on even with a perfectly good battery.
  • A burnt or damaged charge-port circuit — often after a bad cable, a liquid spill or a power surge, the tiny traces and components around the port are damaged.
  • A short circuit — a component has failed short, so the device draws abnormal current, gets hot, or refuses to power up.

Here is the crucial difference in the work involved. A battery is a module you unplug and swap. A board-level fault lives on the logic board among components smaller than a grain of rice, and putting it right means working under a microscope — to replace the charging IC / PMIC, or to carry out board repair on damaged traces and port circuitry, using microsoldering. Fitting a new battery to a device that has a board fault simply won't fix it, which is exactly why an accurate diagnosis needs to come before anyone orders parts.

Swollen or deformed battery: why it happens and what to do

Lithium-polymer batteries can swell — puffing up like a small pillow — as they age, or if they've been damaged, overheated or overcharged. Inside the sealed cell, chemical breakdown produces gas, and because the pack is soft-sided it visibly bulges. You might notice the back of a phone lifting, a laptop that no longer sits flat on a table, a trackpad that clicks strangely, or gaps opening up around the screen.

A swollen battery is a genuine safety hazard. The cell is under pressure and chemically unstable. If it is punctured, crushed or pierced it can vent, catch fire, or in the worst case rupture. This is not a fault to ignore or to "keep using until the weekend".

If you think a battery is swelling, do this:

  • Stop using the device and power it off.
  • Unplug it and do not charge it — charging a swollen cell only makes things worse.
  • Do not press, bend, puncture or "pop" it, and do not try to pry the pack out yourself.
  • Do not put it in a fridge or freezer — that's a myth and can damage the cell further.
  • Keep it away from heat and anything flammable, ideally on a hard, non-combustible surface.
  • Bring it in for safe replacement as soon as you reasonably can.

Swollen batteries need to be removed carefully and disposed of properly — this is a job for a workshop, not a DIY fix.

FAQ

Why won't my phone charge even with a new cable and charger?
If a known-good cable and adapter make no difference, the fault is usually inside the device — commonly a worn charge port, a cracked solder joint at the port, or a charging IC / PMIC fault on the board. A proper diagnosis under the microscope will show which one it is.
How can I tell if it's the battery or the charging port?
A useful clue: if the device only charges when you hold the cable at an angle or press on it, the port is the likely culprit. If it charges fine but drains fast or shuts off early, the battery is more likely. Both can be confirmed on the bench rather than guessed at.
My laptop battery is swollen — is it safe to keep using?
No. Power the device off, unplug it, don't charge it, and don't press or puncture it. A swollen cell is under pressure and can catch fire if it's damaged. Bring it in for safe replacement as soon as you can.
Can a "dead" phone that won't power on be saved?
Often, yes. A device that won't power on isn't always beyond help — it can be a deeply discharged battery or a board-level power fault such as a failed PMIC. Board repair can bring many of these back to life; a diagnosis tells us whether it's worth doing.
